Bringing Mikawa textile craftsmanship to Kyoto.

BLANKED KYOTO is a directly operated store of Nakamori, a textile manufacturer with its own factory in Gamagori, Aichi.

Nakamori was established in 1994 and traces its roots to Nakase Orifu, a weaving company founded in January 1951. Building on textile knowledge developed in the Mikawa region, Nakamori plans and produces gauze fabrics and finished products.

Development of Multi-Layer Gauze Weaving

Nakamori's founder, Tsukasa Nakase, developed a multi-layer weave structure that creates several gauze layers during the weaving process, rather than joining separate pieces of fabric afterwards.

This structure allows the fabric to hold air and develop a soft texture while providing different levels of thickness for different uses. Nakamori has successfully produced a twelve-layer gauze blanket using this technology.

Made at Our Own Factory

Nakamori handles product planning, pattern and weave design, yarn selection and sourcing, weaving, cutting, sewing, inspection, packaging and sales.

The process involves more than operating weaving machines. Skilled staff inspect and handle the fabric as it moves from yarn to finished product. The gauze products sold at BLANKED KYOTO are also made by Nakamori.

Our Approach to Quality

Nakamori has experience producing textile products that obtained OEKO-TEX® STANDARD 100 certification. Quality is managed throughout material selection, weaving, sewing and final inspection according to the intended use of each product.

This does not mean that every product currently sold at BLANKED KYOTO is certified under OEKO-TEX® STANDARD 100.

From Mikawa to Kyoto

Cotton seeds and cultivation techniques are said to have reached the Mikawa region in the year 799. At that time, the Japanese capital was Heian-kyo, present-day Kyoto.

BLANKED KYOTO was opened to introduce visitors from Japan and abroad to the history of Mikawa cotton and the weaving knowledge that Nakamori has carried forward. We chose Gion because of its connection to Kyoto's history and daily culture, as well as its proximity to Yasaka Shrine and Kiyomizu-dera Temple.

Why We Offer Hand Weaving

Japan developed alongside its textile industries, yet many people have few opportunities to learn how everyday towels and clothing are made from individual threads.

At BLANKED KYOTO, guests can experience plain weaving, the most fundamental weave structure. Choosing yarns and repeating each movement at the loom offers a direct way to understand how fabric is created.

We also hope guests enjoy the quiet concentration of weaving, which can feel similar to the stillness associated with Zen.
